  • Living in cars, parks, temporary trailers, camp grounds, abandoned buildings, substandard housing, bus or train stations, public or private places not ordinarily used as sleeping accommodations for human beings

    UNDERSTANDING THE GAPS

    THE GAP AREAS

Our research uncovered many organizations that are currently helping the homeless. As we began to work with the Charlotte County School Homeless Liaison we learned that the basic needs are covered by existing programs. Food, clothing, shoes and school supplies are readily available. Further discussions revealed three areas that are currently not being met.

    TECHNOLOGY

In our high tech world lack of communication devices are a severe detriment to success. This includes:

    • Cell Phones
    • Cell Service
    • Laptops
    • Tablets

    TRANSPORTATION

Bus transportation is provided for all students. Lack of convenient, affordable transportation prohibits students from after school activities and part time jobs. This includes:

    • Bicycles, lock and helmet
    • Uber, Lyft rides
    • Activities transportation

    MENTORING

Charlotte County School System has ONE staff member dedicated to Homeless Youth. Needless to say one person for over 450 students stretches the services thin. This includes:

    • Mentors provide the extra attention that students need to help solve problems, build skills, and enhance competence.
    • Funds are needed to provide training and cover additional expenses.
